PLATFORM PILLAR
Renters live in constant fear of renovictions and rent spikes. The insecurity of renting with insufficient protections from predatory landlords makes Toronto a harder place to live and hollows out the city that we all call home. Renters need more support from the city to build stronger neighbourhoods and more vibrant communities.
As your next city councillor, I will ensure that renters have stronger protections and rentals are safe, livable, and stable.
All renters in this city should have the power to take collective action to improve living conditions. I support tenant associations, unions, and deeper engagement from city programs to ensure that renter experiences are understood and renter voices are heard.
Enforce remedial action pursued against predatory landlords
Help tenants get repairs fixed through remedial action against negligent landlords, tackling 10+ buildings in our ward
We need more action beyond Dawes 500
Double RentSafeTO by-law officers to keep building inspections on track
There are 46 buildings in University-Rosedale which fall under "Needs Improvement" and "Needs Significant Improvement". We need to improve this and make sure tenants can easily access by-law officers when negligent landlords delay or deny repairs.
Expand the number of buildings that would be eligible for RentSafeTO
Today, only buildings that are above 3 stories with 10 or more units are eligible for the program. ACORN is asking to include rental townhouses under RentSafeTO. Many tenants in University-Rosedale also live in multi-unit houses (e.g. triplexes).
Regardless of the type of building, you deserve to live in a safe, well-maintained home.
